Summers in rural Idaho meant many things to me as a kid. They meant long hours of playing outside in the fields and trees without a care in the world, moving sprinkler pipe for the neighboring farmers, weekend camping trips, sleeping under the stars, raising farm animals, getting dirty and planting a garden. The Saturday after school let out each year, my mom and dad would “invite” my four sisters and me (yes, it was a household of women) out to a large piece of freshly tilled dirt that took up the majority of our backyard.

 

With diligent love and attention, this little plot of dirt would soon turn into our own little Garden of Eden. Each of us were assigned an area and given a small bag of seeds to plant. We would follow along the perfectly tilled rows my dad had created earlier that day, drop a seed in the dirt, cover it up, then prepare to water and weed this patch of heaven all summer long. Although I enjoyed the part of the garden where we sowed and harvested potatoes, radishes, corn, cucumbers, peas, tomatoes, and beans, it was the adjacent raspberry patch that I was drawn to.

 

After watering and weeding the garden each day, this tart fruit all but begged me to come pick it and enjoy its sweet taste. Which I did. Every day.   • ½-cup whole-grain cold cereal
  • cinnamon
